Atelier AxiomA global hub for cross-cultural design

Design shaped by culturestogether.

Nothing gets designed in one place. A courtyard in Marrakech cools a clinic in Cordoba; a weaver in Cusco writes the rule a generative system runs on. We follow those exchanges closely, name everyone involved, and publish the terms they were made on.

A minimal gallery interior with a large illuminated canvas, a wooden bench and works hung on white walls.

Axiom Gallery One, London. Eight exhibitions in the programme, six of them open to anyone with a connection.

Reading a Textile as a Grid

Bring a woven sample and a notebook. We map ply, direction and count onto a notation you can hand to a developer, then argue about what the notation loses.

    Who Owns a Motif?

A textile lawyer, a cooperative director and two designers work through four real disputes, including one the panel lost. Attribution, licensing and the money underneath both.

03How it works

Borrowing is not the problem. Borrowing quietly is.

  1. 01

We find the exchange, then ask

Curators go to the people who hold a tradition and put the request in writing: what is wanted, what it is for, and what is offered in return. The answer is sometimes no, and no ends the project.

  2. 02

We show both halves in one room

Every exhibition hangs the source beside the response, with the survey drawings, the counts, the costs and the rejected versions left in. Visitors get the working, not the conclusion.

  3. 03

We publish the terms and the tools

Resources, teaching packs and typefaces are released free under an open licence, makers named as co-authors, licensing income shared. The agreements are printed in full.

04Education spotlight

The two documents people ask us for most.

Written for studios and studios-in-training, kept short enough to be read before a project starts rather than after it goes wrong. Free, no sign-up.

05The community

Join the people doing the asking.

Makers, curators, students and studios working out attribution in the open. Threads stay specific, refusals get recorded, and nobody has to pretend a project went smoothly.

A group seated around a large white table in a bright room, talking through work in progress.
